The Okanagan Lean Construction Community of Practice is committed to boosting productivity and enhancing relationships within the Okanagan construction industry. It’s focus: to engage like-minded individuals who are interested in learning more about lean and how it can be used to drastically improve productivity and project outcomes.
What is a Community of Practice?
A Community of Practice is a group of people who share expertise and passion about a topic and interact on an ongoing basis to further their learning. Members share information, discuss insights, and solve problems while developing tools and frameworks which become part of the community.
The Community of Practice is open to anyone who is involved in Lean Construction or interested in learning more.
The Okanagan Community of Practice (OCoP) Framework
The OCoP meets every other month for 90 minutes. The meetings are held in a virtual format so that participants can join from anywhere in the province. There are 2 categories of events:
- Technical tools: An overview of a Lean concept or tool, including examples and implementation tips. Facilitation is provided by Christy Nikel (see “The OCoP Organizer” below) or other highly qualified Lean practitioners within the industry. Meetings within this category are called “Tried and True” events.
- Implementation insights: An overview of how the Lean tools and concepts have been implemented within an organization, including successes and challenges. Presentations are facilitated by individuals working directly within the construction industry. Meetings within this category are called “Tales from the Trenches” events.
The OCoP Organizer
The OCoP is led by Christy Nikel, the Founder of Lean U, located in beautiful Kelowna, BC. Christy is a Master Lean Black Belt with more than 18 years of experience teaching and implementing Lean concepts. She was introduced to Lean Construction in 2012 while leading the process improvement efforts for SNC Lavalin Transmission & Distribution for Western Canada. Since then, she has been determined to help transform the construction industry through Lean, one project at a time.
